As a mother of three, two of which are girls, I was inspired by my daughter’s struggle to navigate her menstrual cycle in middle school. Attending an all-girls school, my daughter would express her frustrations of smells and odors coming from inside the restrooms and flowing into the halls of the school. She talked about seeing used pads and tampons of others in the restroom trash and toilet. She experienced feelings of embarrassment having to discard her used menstrual products in open trash containers at school, friends’ homes, and sporting events. Her frustration and embarrassment reminded me of my own when I was her age and into adulthood. Born and raised in Memphis, TN, I remember spending weekends and summer days at my grandparents home. The house was usually full of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. I remember feeling awkward and shy about others knowing that I was on my cycle and especially leaving my used pad in the bathroom trash. Even as a teenager myself, I thought that it had to be a better way. Determined to create a solution that would work, not only for teenagers, but for any menstruating woman, SNUCS® were born.
